Frequently asked questions about the digital change of address

With our change-of-address service, your relevant contractual partners are actively notified about your new address, so you can be reached there going forward. Mail forwarding, on the other hand, only redirects letters and post sent to your previous address.

By logging in to your bank account once, all your payment recipients are automatically identified and categorised for you. You then simply decide who should be notified and who should not. You can also add further recipients manually. Accessing payment recipients from your account is completely secure and approved by the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin).

Once you have completed the change-of-address service, you will receive an email with your personal link to the status page.

Your data is protected by 256-bit AES encryption. Access to your bank account is securely provided through our BaFin-licensed partner, fino. Your data is also processed in a certified data centre in Germany.

Your digital change of address takes less than five minutes. After a secure login to your bank account, our partner fino automatically identifies your payment recipients. You choose who should be informed about your new address, add your new address and confirm the request. You can then track the progress through the link in your email.

The digital change-of-address service costs a one-time fee of €29.99. There are no hidden fees.

You can also add further contacts with a complete address at any time. Finally, you decide whether fino sends the letters for you or whether you would like to receive them to send yourself.

Changing address made easy

Moving home is exciting, with plenty to organise. But there is one important task you should not forget in all the hustle and bustle: changing your address, so your letters and parcels are delivered to your new home. In this article, you will find everything you need to know about changing your address and the benefits of a digital change of address compared with mail forwarding.

Why do I need to change my address?

Your post will not automatically arrive at your new address. To ensure that letters from public authorities, banks and insurance providers can still reach you, you need to take action. Changing your address in good time helps prevent problems and delays.

Registering after moving home

The residents’ registration office is the first authority that needs to know about your move and your new address. You should take your ID card and rental agreement with you. If you do not yet have the rental agreement for your new home, a landlord confirmation of residence is sufficient.

If you own a car, you will also need to visit the vehicle registration office to update your details. Shortly after your move, you should inform the tax office of your new address. Other important institutions include your pension insurance provider and health insurer. These are only the official bodies you need to notify.

If you receive child benefit, you should inform the Family Benefits Office about your new address. If you have school-age children, remember to notify their school or nursery too.

Who needs to be informed about my new address?

The list of organisations that need to know your new address is long. As mentioned above, several public authorities and institutions need to know where you live. The list continues:

  • Banks and insurance providers: Inform your bank and insurance providers about your new address.
  • Employer: Tell your employer your new address so that payslips and other important documents are delivered correctly.
  • Utility providers: Contact your electricity, gas, water and internet providers to change your address and, where necessary, cancel or transfer your contracts.
  • Magazines and newspapers: Inform the providers of any magazines and newspapers you subscribe to.
  • Online shops and delivery services: Update your address in the accounts of online shops and delivery services you use regularly.
  • Memberships: Change your address for clubs, gyms and other memberships.

17 is the magic number. On average, a person needs to write 17 letters to inform all important contacts about their new address.

Setting up mail forwarding — the traditional way

You can set up mail forwarding with Deutsche Post, either at one of its branches or on its website. Mail forwarding ensures that your post is redirected to your new address for a specified period of time. The cost varies depending on the chosen duration.

Digital change of address — the modern way

We live in a digital world: we shop online and manage our banking online. So why not change your address digitally too? It saves time and is convenient.

ImmoScout24’s digital change-of-address service can create a list of contacts that should be informed about your move. ImmoScout24 automatically identifies your relevant payment recipients and notifies them. You can also add contacts manually, and ImmoScout24 will notify them for you.

Either way, it is a convenient way to let important contacts know about your new address.
